Kangaroo Island SA Kangaroo Island, located 110 km s-w of Adelaide, is Australia’s third largest island (4 400 sq km) and also one of its major tourist attractions. Original Aboriginal tribes left 3 000 years ago, followed by early sealers & whalers and official settlement in 1836. Harsh conditions and insufficient rainfall held settlement back until tourism. Regular car/passenger ferries from Cape Jervis to Penneshaw (16 km) take 1 hour and there are also flights from Adelaide. Of interest: Seal Bay Conservation Park, Little Sahara, Vivonne Bay, Kelly Hills Conservation Park, Cape Borda Lighthouse, Stokes Bay, Emu Bay, American River, Penneshaw, Cape Willoughby Lighthouse & Hope Cottage Museum, Shipwrecks (23) and Flinders Chase NP (110 km w of Kingscote) comprises almost 33 000 ha of rugged coastlines, huge boulders, walking trails, native wildlife and NZ fur seals. Not to be missed, Remarkable Rocks, Admirals Arch & Cape Borda lighthouse.
